Dr. William Nordling, co-founder and the Chairman of the Department of Psychology at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences (IPS) in WAshington, DC, will provide a comprehensive introduction to the RE model of marital therapy.
A methodology originally developed by Dr. Bernard Gurney during the 1960's, it is an empirically supported model for treating couples and families. This method adopts a virtue/skills training approach that creates a deepening dialogue between spouses to promote unity, understanding, healing, and forgiveness.
The workshop combines lecture, demonstration, observation of clinical sessions, and supervised skills practice. Participants will learn the 10 skill sets which comprise the approach and which may be taught to one's clients. Participants will learn specific therapy skills that are needed to deal effectively with common difficulties in working with couples. The workshop will address how to implement this approach in standard, brief, and crisis intervention formats.
The workshop covers all aspects of this marital therapy model from intake to termination. It will serve as both an introduction to the RE model and as an illustration of what it means to address the needs of Catholic clients as it is consistent with the Catholic understanding of the person, marriage, and family life.
