Message from Therapist

I am currently in private practice at Quo Vadis Therapy Center (www.qvtherapy.com) located at Arden Woods Psychological Services (www.ardenwoodspsych.com), working with individuals, couples, and families in helping them get to where they need to be to improve their daily lives and relationships.

I am familiar with issues that uniquely impact Catholic individuals, couples, families, and systems, and am welcoming of and sensitive to the role of faith in our lives, and see it as a source of strength and healing.

Opportunities for online video / telehealth appointments are available. In-person office appointments are also an option.

Most insurers cover telehealth the same as they do for in-person visits. If you have any questions about what your insurance plan covers, contact your insurer to inquire.

Feel free to contact me with questions or to schedule one or more sessions.                                                                                --Joe Pribyl

Practice Info

Bio:
I have lived in the Twin Cities area for over 40 years. In that time, I received bachelor's degrees in chemistry and religion from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Shortly thereafter, I began work as a lay minister in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Over several years, I worked in parishes and schools as a youth and family minister, classroom instructor, and director/pastoral associate of religious education for youth and adults. During that time, I earned a master's degree in Catholic Studies from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.

My ministry experience led me to seek training as a counselor, which evolved into my decision to become a full-time therapist. I completed my second master's degree in counseling psychology with a concentration in family psychology from the University of St. Thomas.

In my practice, I enjoy working with individuals, families, and couples, including couples in courtship and/or preparing for marriage or who are already married. One of my areas of specialty is in working with religious/spiritual issues. I am familiar with issues that uniquely impact Catholic individuals, couples, families, and systems, but am welcoming of and sensitive to the role of faith in general in our lives. I see religious faith as a source of strength and healing, and research shows good therapeutic outcomes when people can draw from their faith in their therapy process. I allow my clients to bring their spiritual sensibility to therapy as they'd like; never requiring it as a part of therapy. I respect the individual journey each of us is on, and welcome people of all backgrounds (religious and otherwise).

Away from the office, I enjoy spending time with my wife and son, reading, exercising, traveling, etc.

Please describe other treatment methods
I use various therapy techniques depending on the situation and client. For instance, I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral techniques, insight-oriented approaches aimed at discovering what impacts us from outside of conscious awareness, mindfulness, and, of course, spiritual/existential exploration. I emphasize the relational dynamics that affect our well-being, so I utilize a lot of emotionally focused therapy (EFT), especially with couples and families, which is grounded in attachment theory that is purposed toward creating secure relational connections. I am informed by a Catholic anthropological view that emphasizes relationships as key to finding meaning and purpose in life, and therefore peace and wellness. I welcome clients of all backgrounds.
