The New Wave Of Therapy… PDF Print E-mail

allison_nametitleIn today’s busy and fast paced world, many people who might want and seek therapy are hampered by constraints of time and distance. Especially when seeking a truly Catholic therapist, there may not be one close enough to visit each week.  It can be a great frustration.  But new technologies have opened up new opportunities.

For many years, telephone counseling filled the gap when a client was unable to make an appointment in-person, but with the advent of skype and other computer-video technologies that enable two people to see each other in real time over the internet, the disadvantages of distance counseling are significantly reduced.  Naturally a little is lost without being in the same room with your therapist but that loss may be pretty negligible.  It’s much better to be able to choose the counselor you feel most comfortable with, rather than engaging one with whom you are not as compatible simply because of location.

There can be a down side.  With any form of electronic or internet communication, security and confidentiality can be a concern for some.  But with encryption and other security measures, those concerns can be reduced as well.

As a practitioner of Dr. Baars’ methods of affirmation therapy, I’ve observed the benefit of skype counseling with clients in other states who were unable to find someone who used this method nearby.  We began on the telephone and soon moved to using skype and the clients’ improvement have been substantial.  The ability to see and connect visually has aided greatly in the healing process.

There are other advantages to be considered as well.  Weather is no problem, there’s no time wasted on travel and the need to pay for babysitting while at your session is also eliminated. For so many, skype counseling is a winning option.

If you are looking for a counselor and can’t find someone close by, or if you would prefer not to spend time travelling etc., consider trying out the skype option.  Many of our member therapists now offer this service.

If you’ve already been seeing a counselor via skype, please let us know your experience.

May God bless you in your healing journey.
