  • Experience the joy of having your faith integrated with the best of the psychological sciences!

As a Catholic psychologist, I seek to integrate the best of the psychological sciences with the Church's anthropology.  In doing so, you can rest assured that you will receive clinical care which is both scientifically based, and religiously sound.  I also seek to help each patient to not merely alleviate their symptoms, but also to discover and to engage in their God-given vocation so that they can discover meaning and to flourish in their lives.

While I have experience with a wide patient population, I possess particular experience in working with couples recovering from infidelity, high-risk adolescents, personality disorders, trauma victims, and psychological assessment for children suffering from ADHD and Learning Disabilities.

More About Dr. William McKenna, Psy.D.

William is a proud Richmond, VA native.  Growing up he spent his time both on the baseball field along with on the theater stage.  He attended St. Edwards-Epiphany School from K-8th grade and then graduated from Benedictine College Preparatory in 2007.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Theology from Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC (where he also met his wonderful wife) in 2011.  He then earned his masters and doctorate from the Institute for the Psychological Sciences (IPS), a School of Psychology at Divine Mercy University in 2014 and 2017.  IPS is the only psychology program in the country which actively trains its students to integrate the Catholic Faith with psychology.

William is an active member of the Catholic Psychotherapy Association (CPA), serving as its chair of the Communications Committee.  He will be presenting at next year's CPA's national conference.  He is also a member of the Society of Catholic Social Scientists and presented at their conference this past October.

William has worked with a wide variety of patients: from the affluent to the working poor and with those suffering from homelessness.  He has also worked with those suffering from schizophrenia to those who find themselves at a crossroads in their lives.  All the while, he seeks to bring out the dignity in each patient and to help them succeed in therapy so that they can lead a flourishing life.
