Message from Therapist

Choosing a therapist can be a time-consuming, anxiety-provoking, and confusing process.  Hopefully, the information provided on this website will be of some help in deciding whether my services will be a good fit for you and your counseling goals.  Feel free to call or email me with any questions you might have about my training and approach.

I have received extensive training in marriage counseling and consider this my primary specialty. I have received advanced training in the Gottman Method and in Emotionally Focused Therapy. EFT currently has the highest success rate of research tested methods in couples therapy.

In addition to marriage counseling, I also work with individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, stress related problems, shame, spiritual, and anger issues.

My approach is to work with the whole person, which recognizes Christian spirituality as an essential element of what it means to be truly human.  Understanding our need for grace, along with utilizing sound and effective psychological methods, is a powerful means to healing.

I am located in Saint Paul, MN. Conveniently accessed from I-94 and I-35 in the Twin Cities area and offer evening appointments. Also provide Online Teletherapy services throughout Minnesota.

Grace and Peace,
Dan Stokman

Bio:
As a Catholic therapist, I provide services to the greater Minneapolis and St Paul area (Twin Cities). For clients traveling a greater distance, I have flexibility to schedule longer sessions, which has proven effective for couples seeking healing to their relationship hurt. Marriage counseling is my primary specialty, but I work with clients struggling with a number of other issues, including depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, grief, and shame.

I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) through the state of Minnesota and a Certified Life Coach through the Adler Institute.

My passion is to see transformation take place in the lives of individuals and couples as they experience greater fulfillment and purpose in their lives. In my own life, with its own struggles, I am very aware of my need for Gods grace. Without the One who knows me and loves me, my life lacks vitality, clarity, hope, and direction. We all stand in need of Christ and counseling is no substitute for this. That being said, we need a complete understanding and approach to the human person when we find ourselves facing emotional pain. My profession, which is very much a sense of a calling, focuses primarily on the psychological/emotional aspect of the human person, but framed within the context of knowing the whole of man is so much more.

My graduate studies at Franciscan University of Steubenville provided a great understanding of how to integrate the Catholic faith with the psychological sciences. I graduated in 1995 with a Masters degree in Counseling.

More About Dan Stokman, MA, LPCC

Novare, to make new in Latin, derives it's deeper meaning from Revelations 21:5 "Behold, I make all things new".  Offering Catholic applied psychotherapy that reflects the beauty and truth of our Catholic faith helps make all things new for those who are suffering.

I have been in private practice for the past ten years and worked in several mental-health related roles and facilities.

These various work settings were not always supportive of a Catholic vision of the human person and over time created a need to work alongside other Catholic therapists.  Novare Counseling Center is a growing group practice that calls Catholic clinicians to live out their faith in solidarity with one another and to provide exceptional care to our clients.   As the director of Novare Counseling Center, I can attest to how living in community with other professionals offers better care to my clients.  We hold high standards for our clinical work.  Being Catholic is not enough, we need to give ourselves to our work and excel in the care we provide.

Novare Counseling Center is based in Saint Paul and offers both individual, couple and family therapy along with psychological testing.
