Message from Therapist

I have been a Catholic counselor for over 25 years.  In the course of practice, I have found that the pain that people experience is often not from the actual painful experiences or relationships, per se, but rather from our interpretation of painful events that are not in line with the truth or with how God sees them.  These interpretations are not rational but are experienced emotionally, often at a visceral, gut level.

A problem with traditional approaches, even faith-based approaches, is that counselors give counsel to clients’ rational minds. However, this is not where the lies and trauma are held. They reside in the heart and are experienced emotionally. Instead of simply providing rational truth to clients, we pray to the Holy Spirit, who takes clients to the origin and source of their pain. I assist in removing the obstacles preventing clients from receiving God’s truth.  Jesus, Himself, eradicates the pain at its source, and He also eventually removes trauma and the parts that were formed to contain it.  When this occurs, it is maintenance-free recovery, for “when the Son sets you free, you are free indeed!” (Jn 8:36)

Bio:
Craig S. Smith, LPC, holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and psychology from the University of Notre Dame (1993). At the end of college, Craig experienced a profound reversion to the Catholic faith (see his website) and changed his career choice to counseling. He subsequently attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville, attaining an MA in counseling (1995), with a specialization in Christian counseling. Also trained in Affirmation therapy, based on the teachings of St Thomas Aquinas through the work of Catholic psychiatrist Dr. Conrad Baars.

Early on in his practice, Craig was led by God more and more to see his powerlessness to heal the deepest pains of the heart. God gradually showed Craig how to get the obstacles out of the way so that Jesus, the divine physician, could heal as only He can heal. Whether depression, anxiety, trauma from an abusive situation or family, or whatever insecurity and pain clients hold, Craig is confident in God’s ability to remove the pain altogether and to replace it with His peace and hope. The fruits of this are a strengthening of one’s relationship with Him as He manifests His mercy, grace, and true miracles of the heart.

Craig lives in St. Louis with his wife and 8 children. He is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Missouri and also offers prayer healing ministry in all 50 states via videoconferencing.

Craig is faithful to the Church’s Magisterium. He loves his Catholic faith more than life itself, and its founder, Jesus Christ, His Lord and God, who died for him so that he could be a vessel to attain eternal life and freedom in this life, from bondage to sin, and lies, and trauma of the heart.
