Message from Therapist

"Behold, I will do a new thing;
now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?
I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."
Isaiah 43:19

* Currently Not Able to Accept New Clients - check back in May *

At times, we may feel like our life is like a desert.  A desert is very dry and isolated, and sometimes we come to a place just like this, where we seek solutions to stubborn problems that are not allowing us to move forward with courage.  The obstacles you face can seem overwhelming, for whatever reason.  My work with you is a collaborate effort.  Christ wants to make a river in your life, and do a new thing. But you must allow Him to do it, by taking that first step in seeking the support that you need during difficult periods.  Let's work together to find a way through your desert, and come to a place of refreshment and restoration.

"Ask, and it shall be given you;
seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you:”
Matthew 7:7

Practice Info

Bio:
I am a wife and mother and I am a Licensed Behavior Specialist with the Board of Medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I am also a 3rd order Benedictine, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I am very devoted to the Blessed Mother and have been most of my life.

I began my journey in the mental health field through working with special needs students diagnosed with ASD and other behavior disorders, which included working in residential psychiatric hospitals. This led me to one of my callings, which was to work as a clinician with families and children/adolescents in overcoming challenging family dynamics, generational maladaptive behaviors and learning how to effectively process emotions and self-advocate in various settings through Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS). While working in IBHS, my interest in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy had grown and I decided to learn how to use this method with individuals one on one and also with families. I find that this type of therapy is very effective for various mental health issues because it is wisdom-based, and uses the Socratic method to challenge unwanted thoughts. It also requires the client to increase their accountability and their ability to self-reflect more frequently to effectively change direction on addressing problem behaviors.

More About Joanie Bentz, BS, M.Ed, LBS, CCBP

"The one who knows how to profit by his own errors is the one who makes a success of life. To be discouraged over your mistakes is foolish. To disregard them is equally unwise. To face them fearlessly and try to learn from them how to avoid a mistake next time is part of wisdom." - Fr. Edward F. Garesche, Catholic Book of Character and Success, 1912

I can help you cultivate an understanding that the body, mind and spirit are all connected.  Being self-aware means that you are  focusing on the reality of your behavior and not on the story you tell yourself about.... yourself!

I recommend the book  The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma  by Bessel van der Kolk to reinforce this idea.

The culture that we live in tends at times to impose a "one size fits all" mentality when it comes to mental health and overall wellness.  As human beings, we are uniquely designed and have varied backgrounds and experiences that have molded us into who we are today.  Healing modalities vary, and what works for one person may not work for another.  I would like to strive to find what approaches work best for you and what you can manage on day to day basis.  Just like Rome was not built in a day, you will not transform and renew your outlook unless you remain consistent and focused. That's where I come in as a clinician!  My role is like a facilitator.  I will help you find those tools, and use them, while I offer the support as you adapt to new ways of thinking and functioning.
