Message from Therapist

I look forward to helping others within the realm of our shared world view and values. I am excited to be able to integrate my faith with my work.  My faith is ever-growing, just as I am always a work in progress.

Employing a Biopsychosocial-spiritual model, I explore patients' concerns from all angles and use a person-centered approach, via genuineness, unconditional positive regard & empathy, while also exploring issues deeper through a psychodynamic approach that helps each person discover the unconscious meaning behind their thoughts, emotions and behaviors.

Specializing in children and adolescents, I have extensive experience working with teachers, school staff & parents.  I also conduct assessments. I have helped patients with a range of problems (school behavior, to severe trauma, to adjustments surrounding changes in life, and even those with psychotic disorders).

My clients have ranged in age from 3-88. Other areas in which I have aided persons include: trauma, attachment & loss, women in transition, and those with chronic conditions (such as pain, whether it is back or migraines, asthma or allergies, & even Restless Leg Syndrome).

God has created us so wonderfully, beautifully and specifically, that if we are stressed emotionally, He formed a way for us to stop, notice something is wrong, and (hopefully) come to the understanding that we need to listen and express our true selves!

I am providing sessions in-person at my new location in Pike Road, AL.

I am already in-network with some insurance companies and hope to continue to get on panels for the next couple of months. Please check your insurance to see if I am, indeed, in network.

Bio:
Maureen Dougherty, Psy.D. graduated from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in 2007. Her clinical successes include work with children, adolescents, families, women, and those experiencing chronic pain and more. Focus on children has reinforced her conviction that each person has human value and nothing gives her more joy than helping persons realize their greatest potential. In addition, Dr. Dougherty has received training specific to those who have suffered trauma and considers it another niche.

Beginning graduate school at age 39, with two school-aged children, Dr. Dougherty found the balancing act to be challenging and she overcame many obstacles to become a Clinical Psychologist. Married since 1983, with now-grown and successful children, Dr. Dougherty brings extensive life experience into her compassionate healing approach. Utilizing various modalities, she creates a safe environment to explore underlying causes to current problems.

Dr. Dougherty has found play therapy to be particularly effective in treating children and adolescents. This technique employs materials that allow youths to process and express concerns non-verbally in a non-threatening environment. In addition, she has over five years experience working within schools, in evaluating and providing counseling to students, providing information, support, and counseling to students parents and families, and suggesting recommendations to, supporting, and educating teachers and school staff about emotional and behavior matters. Always watching for better ways to serve her patient, Dr. Dougherty recently added treatment strategies that make use of mind-body techniques to help alleviate chronic pain conditions.
