Message from Therapist

I utilize many different assessments and therapy approaches in my work with clients. I work with you to review symptoms and goals in order to develop an effective treatment plan that respects your individual goals for treatment.  Our work is collaborative, and we develop a plan and work together to ensure that you are feeling supported, affirmed and yet challenged. I recommend a program that is multifaceted with education, testing, support groups, and both individual and group counseling.   I will offer support and guidance as you pass through this journey of change that occurs in therapy and moves you toward an enriched quality of life.

My experience includes individual counseling with adults, adolescents and children, and also with couples in marriage preparation and marriage counseling.  I work with clients who have anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and other issues that keep them from functioning at a healthy level.   I use a number of therapy approaches, including CBT, EMDR, Psychodynamic (Jungian) psychology, Internal Family Systems and Somatic approaches.  It is my belief that we must be balanced in mind, body and spirit to have a whole and healthy life and my therapy approach incorporates all of these modalities.

I continue to update my clinical skills to include many new insights that are now available to mental health practitioners such as the role of attachment in our early life and its lasting effect on our personality and sense of self-worth.

The importance of somatic or body work in our health and ability to feel relaxed, safe and connected. The role of memory and trauma in our ability to function in daily life with a sense of self agency and self-regulation.  I include your needs to explore and discuss your spiritual needs as part of the counseling process and as a resource for healing.

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (Maryland) & Licensed Professional Counselor (District of Columbia) & Licensed Professional Counselor (Virginia)

Welcome to the counseling practice for Patricia C. Adams, MS, LCPC.  This information is to give you and overview of important information about my behavioral health counseling practices.  I understand that choosing a counselor is a personal decision and that I will work with you to achieve your therapy goals.  My counseling orientation is varied based on the clients needs for therapy.  We can discuss what is the useful therapy approaches for your situation.

Generally, the first 1-3 sessions will involve a comprehensive evaluation of your needs. Together, we will discuss your treatment goals, history, symptoms and create a treatment plan. Periodically, we will review your progress towards these goals and make any necessary adjustments. You are always free to ask questions about your treatment, progress or methods used toward achieving your goals remember this is a collaborative process.

Counseling Process:

You will need to participate as an active participant in the therapy and you may be assigned exercises to complete between counseling appointments.  Your active support for the counseling process is essential for its effectiveness.  Therapy often leads to a significant reduction in feelings of distress, increased satisfaction in interpersonal relationships, greater personal awareness and insight, increased skills for managing stress and resolutions to specific problems.  There is no guarantee that counseling will eliminate all of the issues that have brought you to seek counseling.  However with your active participation and completion of exercises outside of counseling you will increase the potential for successful outcomes.

We will talk about your history and memories and what you are experiencing in your life today. There is new research (ACES study)  that links mental and physical health to childhood experiences that were disturbing.  Disturbances can be large (like the death or illness of a loved one or a difficulty in birth or childhood illness), or it could be a small t (such as being bullied by siblings, school mates or parents).  These events can affect how we view ourselves and cut us off from feeling healthy and whole.  In therapy we will review your history and and disturbing memories and find out if they are connected to your current symptoms.  There are several approaches that assist with lowering the disturbance level memory and connect the self to inner wisdom which God has placed in our soul so that we can heal.

Resourcing:

We will identify your positive memories and healthy times.  I will teach you how to access emotional regulation and safety.   We will utilize your resources with activities like art and writing.  The point is to keep interacting with the symptoms in ways that are different than those that you’re used to.
