** I am currently not taking new patients. **
I do have a wait-list for those seeking
in-person therapy at my Front Royal, VA office.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist. I work with children, adolescents, and adults.  I frequently work as a generalist but specialize in treating patients with trauma, attachment difficulties, or neurodivergence like autism or ADHD.

Typically I use play therapy with children until around age 10.  Working through difficulties playfully is often much easier and more effective for children than talk therapy.

For all other ages, I work from a depth or psychodynamic approach.  I don’t give advice or come with a pre-arranged agenda. Instead, sessions are structed around understanding and working through your specific concerns and needs.  I focus a great deal on developing a strong therapeutic relationship because regardless of the type therapy, this relationship is consistently found to be the most effective part of therapy. So, my role is first and foremost to listen attentively and without judgment so you have space to think, feel, and talk. As we talk, I’ll ask questions and make connections to get to know you and help you work through psychological difficulties. Through this process, patients come to grieve losses in a constructive and healthy way.  They become more comfortable with themselves so that they can admit their own goodness and also their own mistakes openly, helpfully, and without overly harsh self-judgment.  Patients also come to understand themselves better especially around why they do what they do and also why they sometimes get in their own way.  Through understanding themselves better, they are also better able to understand others so that they have a greater ability to work through relationship or attachment difficulties.

Bio:
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Virginia and am registered under Psypact so that I can provide teletherapy in certain other states including Maryland and DC.

I received my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) from Divine Mercy University, a Catholic psychology program. I trained in the Child Development Clinic at Children’s National where I provided developmental assessments to young children. I then completed a training year at Divine Mercy University’s clinic and then at Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Arlington; at both sites, I provided individual psychotherapy and psychological assessments. For my internship year, I trained at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital in Johnstown, PA where I provided individual psychotherapy for trauma, depression, anxiety, weight loss, and diabetes management as well as psychological testing. I returned to Catholic Charities for postdoctoral training where I supervised trainees, led their assessment program, provided psychological assessment, and saw adolescent and adult patients for individual therapy.

Alongside my training there, I also trained at Psychotherapy Associates of the DMV, a group private practice and I am now a full-time member of that group.

I work from a psychodynamic/depth therapy perspective with adults and adolescents. I work from this therapeutic style because I have seen it benefit patients by helping them to make profound changes and better understand themselves. When therapy is done, patients frequently continue to grow and in particular find greater development in their abilities to understand themselves and other people as well as finding healthier ways to meet their wants and needs. Patients that I see are often looking to get to the roots of problems and make deep, lasting changes in their lives. Many of my patients have already completed beneficial work to develop skills and are now looking to work in a deeper way while others are entering therapy for the first time. In terms of the difficulties that bring them in, I work with patients suffering from depressions and anxieties, diagnoses such as Major Depression, Bipolar, PTSD, Generalized Anxiety, Autism, ADHD, and personality disorders. Beyond diagnosis, my patients are often working through difficult relationships, recovering from traumas in their past especially in childhood, trying to understand and change unhealthy or self-destructive patterns, making life transitions, or struggling with crises of faith.

While diagnosis is important, I primarily try to understand and address the specific needs of the patient. I tend to meet with patients for a few months but might work with them for a few years if needed – therapy needs to meet your needs and timeline and not an arbitrary end date. I meet with patients weekly or more. Research tells us that it can take a few months to develop a good therapeutic relationship and six months or more to develop lasting change with more time needed if the patient is experiencing more profound difficulties like personality disorder or other life difficulties that get in the way of change. Meeting more often and for a longer period of time means that we get to take the time to develop a strong relationship which is essential for good therapy as well as to delve deep into personality and temperament, experiences, relationship patterns, defenses, etc.

I also work with children. For children 10 and under, I use child-centered play therapy. Children have a remarkable way of figuring things out for themselves when given the right framing. Play therapy helps them explore and play out whatever it is that might be bothering them. The role of the therapist is to keep that process of self-correction going and to provide greater insight into their difficulties. For children who are older or uninterested in play therapy, I would transition to talk therapy which primarily differs from therapy with adults in that children are usually more open to new insights and change and so the therapy is often about encouraging thought and expression while providing connections between the things they talk about. When working with children, I find it very important for them to have the room to figure out what is concerning them since oftentimes, what looks like the problem is often just a symptom while the actual problem might be navigating school, growing up, relating to siblings or parents, making friends, feeling lonely or different, etc.
